Characteristics of Vibrations at the Wheel and Rail According to Train Vehicle Dynamics using a Twin-disk Rig

초록

Wheel-rail interaction-induced vibrations are inherent to railway vehicles and have a significant impact on various phenomena, including adhesion coefficients, rolling noise, and wear. While research on these vibrations has primarily relied on theoretical approaches due to practical limitations, this study bridges the gap by conducting experimental investigations using the twin-disk type wheel-rail contact simulator at the Korea Railroad Research Institute. The experiments involved high-carbon steel specimens with flat-tread wheels and head-profiled rails. Vibration data were collected during the acceleration, slip, and deceleration phases under dry surface conditions. The results indicated that the vibration magnitudes were influenced by the train vehicle dynamics and contact conditions. Specifically, lower slip conditions, which are typical of acceleration and deceleration, produced higher vibrations. A frequency analysis revealed distinct characteristics between rolling/sliding and pure sliding contact zones. Vibrations in the rolling/sliding contact zone peaked at approximately 1250Hz, while pure sliding contact led to a significant reduction in vibrations at this frequency. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the relationship between wheel?rail interactions and vibrations in various operational scenarios, contributing to a better understanding of railway vehicle dynamics.
