A simplified elastic analysis model based on Bray's analytical solution is proposed to predict the possible sliding and/or opening near a tunnel structure excavated in jointed rock masses. The analytical stress calculation procedure for orthotropic material with a cavity is reviewed and a slightly different result is proposed. Based on the stress distribution of the orthotropic material, i.e., jointed rock masses, the structural relationships between orthotropic and constituent materials are derived, and, from this, the stress components of the intact rock and rock joint are evaluated. A conventional Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion is subsequently introduced to check the possible non-elastic behavior of the constituent materials, i.e., sliding and/or opening of the rock joint/intact rock. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed model is verified with the experimental data available. Bi-axial compressive loading tests are performed on brittle material with discontinuities and the test results are compared with those of the proposed model. The results of the proposed analytical model are in good agreement with the test results and, therefore, the model can be used in the preliminary tunnel design to evaluate tunnel stability and the need for additional reinforcements.
