Numerical Analysis of Piston Effects in Deep Tunnel for High-Speed Train

초록

In general, railway operation causes consistent generation of particulate matter (PM). In shallow tunnels, natural ventilation by piston effect of railcar is effective. However, in deep tunnels, this piston effect has not been confirmed. In this study, the influence of piston effects on natural ventilation of deep tunnels was numerically simulated. The results showed that tunnel air moves outward through perpendicular holes before passage of high-speed trains, while outdoor air moves into tunnels through perpendicular holes after passage of high-speed train. However, because air speed was not high, and air movement gradually disappeared after passage of train, piston effect was not sufficient to reduce PM concentrations. Therefore, it was found that a mechanical ventilation method or the introduction of a direct PM reducing method are needed to lower PM concentrations of deep tunnels.
