The prediction of heat transfer characteristics of rotating discs in crossflow parallel to the rotating plane is crucial to the evaluation of the cooling characteristics of brake discs. In this study, the convective heat transfer and flow characteristics of wheel-mounted brake discs in inboard bogies were analyzed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), with a focus on the differences in convective heat transfer characteristics at the brake disc surface and the inner fin regions depending on the presence of protrusion of the axial shaft in the center of the wheel. Results of the analysis showed that heat transfer coefficient was approximately double in the disc fin region with the protruding axle compared to that in the disc fin region without. This may be attributed to flow in the protruding axle disc fin region being much stronger than in the non-protruding axle disc fin region.
