Failure Mode Characterization of Composite Materials for Weight Reduction of Railway Vehicles

From the viewpoint of environment and energy efficiency, many efforts are continuously being made to reduce the weight of railway vehicles. A representative example of this can be the replacement of existing metallic materials using composite materials. In particular, polymer matrix composites are being applied to bogies as well as car bodies in the field of railway vehicles because they can reduce the weight of structures without reducing the strength compared to conventional metallic materials. In this study, the tensile failure characteristics of polymer matrix composites developed for the purpose of reducing the weight of railway vehicles were investigated. During the tensile test, a high-speed infrared camera was applied to examine the failure characteristics and failure modes. In this study, the tensile failure characteristics and failure mode characteristics of composite materials were explained through infrared thermal imaging analysis, and we would like to introduce that infrared thermal imaging technology can be used for mechanical characterization.
