A mountain tram is an environmentally friendly public transportation system that is available on sharply curved and steep roads in mountainous regions. It guarantees the right of mobility for residents and comfortable transport services for tourists. In this study, the behavior of a Korean mountain tram on a curve was analyzed theoretically, and its accuracy was verified through numerical simulations and tests using a 1/20 scaled model. On the basis of the analysis results, the previous 3-carbody-3-bogie formation was reviewed, and an improved design was proposed to solve the problem in the propulsion system caused by large angular displacements. The relative angular displacements among carbodies could be absorbed by articulations, and those between the carbody and the bogie could be reduced by adopting a 3-carbody-2-bogie formation. The optimum layout design for the tram could be obtained using the theoretical equations deduced in this study.
