Effect of Introducing Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trams in Hydrogen Pilot Cities on Carbon Emission Impact in the Operation Phase of the Transport Sector

This study quantitatively analyzed the carbon emission impact in the transport sector of hydrogen pilot cities when hydrogen fuel cell trams replace public transport, assuming that on tram set replaces three buses. Annual travel distance and fuel consumption were estimated from route distance, operation frequency, and fuel efficiency by energy type. Scenarios considered bus fuel types (diesel, CNG, and electric) and hydrogen production methods (grey, blue, and green). Results indicate that hydrogen fuel cell trams significantly reduce GHG emissions compared with all bus types, with the greatest benefits observed when using green hydrogen, over 97% reduction. The findings highlight that hydrogen fuel cell trams can contribute to the decarbonization of urban transport. Furthermore, the reduction effects differ with transport characteristics and the energy mix, thereby offering a valuable basis for future hydrogen-based transport transition policies and the development of region-specific carbon neutrality strategies.
