To effectively reduce risk of buckling and breakage of continuous welded rails(CWR), it is essential to evaluate the rail axial stress. In this study, the applicability of the instrumented indentation technique(IIT) for evaluating the rail axial stress was reviewed. For this, in consideration of the domestic design standard of axial force exerted in CWR, compressive loads of 300kN, 600kN, 740kN and 900kN were applied to a full-scale 60E1 rail specimen and stress measurements by IIT were performed at 2 points for each applied load. The maximum difference of the theoretical stress and the average value of the stresses measured at 2 points for each applied load was 2.1MPa when rail was subjected to 900kN compressive load. These measurement results are less than 2.4 MPa, which is equivalent to a temperature change of 1°C of a 60E1 CWR. Based on these test results, it was confirmed that IIT can be usefully applied to evaluate the axial stress of CWR.
