Software Standards for the Safety Critical Railway System

For the past decades, software engineering has been applied rapidly to safety critical computer systems. Safety-critical systems are those in which a failure can have serious and irreversible consequences. The systems such as the aerospace control system, military weapon control system, railway control system, and nuclear power plant control system are the safety critical systems. The software used in the digital control systems must follow the life cycle process from the beginning of software development to guarantee their safety and reliability. In order to follow both the frameworks of the standards, it is necessary to compare the safety lifecycle, and identify the differences of the frameworks. In this paper the safety lifecycle and planning activities defined in IEC 61508 are compared with those of IEC 62279. For more detail application, IEC 62279 is applied to the development process.
