Effects of Wheel Tread with Laser-Hardened, Short-Pitch Lateral Grooves on the Friction Coefficients on the Wheel-Rail Contact Surface

Unlike traditional wheels, laser-hardened wheels with short-pitch lateral grooves provide safe braking and stable traction for all tested speeds (50 and 100 km/h) under wet conditions because the friction coefficients between the wheels and rail are nearly constant at above 0.2 regardless of the creep level. Under dry conditions, the short-pitch lateral grooves better control the friction coefficients at a test speed of 50 km/h, reducing the energy requirements, vibration and noise.
