Comparative Study on the Energy Efficiency and Greenhouse Gas(GHG) Emissions of Railway Fuels: Electricity, Diesel, and Hydrogen

초록
This study analyzes energy efficiency and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of railway vehicles in Korea. National statistical data were used to quantify well-to-wheel (WTW) GHG emissions for electric-, diesel-, and hydrogen- powered trains. Total emissions were found to decrease from diesel to electric to hydrogen. Although emissions from hydrogen train depend on production pathways and import scenarios, life cycle assessment indicates substantial reductions relative to conventional fuels. These findings suggest that hydrogen railway vehicles can accelerate rail decarbonization in Korea and provide evidence to inform fuel-switching strategies and low-carbon policy.
